Ensuring durability through sustainable craftsmanship has always been a core part of our business.
In Sylvsmidja’s early years, repair work was essential to everyday life. During and after World War II, when much of Voss lay in ruins and had to be rebuilt, many relied on skilled hands to restore their belongings.
Aside from jewelry, everything from tools and machines to knitting needles was repaired and put back to use in Sylvsmidja’s tiny workshop. Even broken sheep bells were carefully restored by our founder, master goldsmith Leif Johannessen.
This dedication to craftsmanship and reuse—key aspects of sustainability—remains at the heart of everything we do. By passing down skills and traditions for generations, we ensure lasting quality.
We use recycled silver, much of which we refine and
reuse in our own workshop.
Fair Trade gems are carefully selected to ensure
ethical sourcing and responsible production.
Even the jewelry itself embodies sustainability at its finest. Designed to last a lifetime, it can be passed from one generation to the next. If it needs care, we restore its original shine. And if a complete transformation is desired, it can be remelted and crafted into something entirely new.
Each piece of jewelry from Sylvsmidja carries a special mark—a "J" shaped like an ancient drinking horn, honoring our founder, Leif Johannessen. It has been our hallmark since 1940, serving as a guarantee of quality and traceability.
